EXHIBITION STATEMENT
THE STUDIO begins with a simple question: where does creative work begin?
Before an artwork reaches a gallery, stage, book, screen, public space or collection, it begins somewhere. It might begin in a studio, darkroom, kitchen, garage, rehearsal room, shared workspace, classroom, print shop, bedroom or borrowed corner of the city.
THE STUDIO brings these places of practice into public view through photographs made by artists working across disciplines. Together, the images reveal the spaces, tools, materials, routines, constraints and possibilities that shape creative work.
At a time when the conditions that allow artists to remain and create in Vancouver are increasingly fragile, the exhibition is both a celebration of artistic practice and a public statement about the importance of affordable, accessible space for artists.
