“Standing Forms” Exhibition and the Limited Edition LP Release of OTONOM

Gallery 881 excited to announce the opening of our 2023 - 2024 exhibition season. Join us for Hank Bull's "Standing Forms,” which includes 11 works in an engaging installation. The opening reception coincides with the limited edition record launch of a 12” LP record called OTONOM. The record is a series of freely improvised compositions for piano, performed by Hank Bull and recorded by Josh Stevenson at Western Front in 2022. These pieces come directly from the imagination. They combine the body memory of many years at the keyboard with new rhythms and hand patterns. Production of the vinyl, delayed by Covid, was accomplished in Prague by GZ, one of the world’s oldest pressing plants. There is no download card, CD or online version. OTONOM is produced in a limited edition of 100 records. Release price: $50.00 including GST.

Artist Bio

Hank Bull has been active on the Vancouver art scene since the early 1970s. He was an early member of the Western Front, where he explored radio art, cabaret performance, shadow theatre, and collaborative production of all kinds. A participant in global art networks since the 1980s, he was an early adopter of telecommunications technology, contributed to the development of artist-directed economies of exchange and produced numerous international projects. Throughout a hybrid career as artist/curator/administrator/advocate, he has continued to make art in a range of media, including painting, photography, video, music and sound. He was born at Moh’kins’tsis, Calgary, and lives with gratitude on the traditional and unceded territory of the xwməθkwəy̓əm Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, Vancouver.
