Meet the Artist + Film Screening: NEPANTLA by Alexa Black

Join us for an intimate, softly lit evening at Gallery 881 on Thursday, November 27, from 7–9pm. The lights will be dimmed as we screen a 10-minute looping film central to Alexa Black’s NEPANTLA series — a powerful visual meditation on identity, reclamation, and ancestral memory. The artist will be on hand throughout the evening for informal conversation about the exhibition, her process, and the themes that shape her practice.

During the event, we will be screening a 10-minute looping film created by Alexa in collaboration with cinematographer Hennen Payne, special effects coordinator Sami Belle, and production assistant Will West. The film confronts the silent violence of erasure across generations, drawing attention to suppressed language systems — including the Nahuat origins of Nepantla, a word that names the “in-between” space where worlds and identities transform.
