Pen Pals Statement

“Pen Pals” is a celebration of slow and sparse communication inspired by the practice of letter-writing before a digital age. While far from home, Luca invites viewers into an exchange with curator John Goldsmith in Vancouver, Canada. Each month, Luca mails a set of images taken on instant film to Gallery 881, where they are curated into a six-image “visual letter,” creating a unique, evolving exhibition. This correspondence, unfolding through May 2025, offers a meditative view on distance and place, and a reflection on the ways we communicate.

Bio

Luca Camaiani is interested in photography’s relationship with shared and personal memory, and the production of sentimentality. With a belief in sincerity, Luca photographs his public and private life with an approach that might be described as autobiographic documentary photography. Luca is based in Vancouver, Canada.
